Die Melodie ist schottischen Ursprungs, doch der Text dieses irischen Folksongs ist weniger bedeutungsschwanger wie Loch Lomond.

Deutung

Ein junger Mann schwärmt von seiner Heimat und schwört aus der Ferne seiner Verlobten, die er schmerzlich zurücklassen musste, ihr treu zu bleiben. Als Grund lässt sich ein Militärdienst erahnen, aber auch Wanderjahre wärend der Ausbildung (  Walz) wären denkbar.
