Im Text wird ein geliebter Mann verabschiedet. Die Zeit der Publikation lässt an einen irischen Auswanderer denken, welcher der  großen Hungersnot in Irland aufgrund der Kartoffelfäule entfloh. Doch das Lied lässt unklar, wer ihn verabschiedet, wohin er sich begibt, und ob er wiederkommt, so dass sich der Kontext beliebig abwandeln lässt. Jedenfalls gilt das Lied als inoffizielle Hymne aller ausgewanderten Iren.
