John Hodges trat als Cool White in sog. Blackface-Minstrel-Shows auf. Sein Lied Lubly Fan war in den ganzen Vereinigten Staaten so beliebt, dass die Minstrels den Liedtext änderten und dem örtlichen Publikum anpassten. Auf diese Weise entstanden Varianten wie New York Gals in New York City oder Boston Gals in Boston. Die bekannteste Variante wurde aber nach der Stadt Buffalo im Bundesstaat New York benannt (und hat mit dem bekannten Herdentier nichts zu tun).
